Swansea City manager Paul Clement has admitted that he is keen on making a move for Chelsea defender John Terry, who will be available on a free transfer in the summer.
Terry will be leaving the blues after 22 years at the club. The 36-year-old recently hinted that he may hang up his boots at the end of the campaign, as his future still remains unclear. Terry has reportedly received several offers from the Premier League, where he has been breaking numerous records over the last couple of years. Terry is the highest scoring defender in the league, and he once again demonstrated his prowess in front of goal by scoring the opening goal in Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Watford on Monday night.
Even though Terry is unlikely to take up an offer in the Premier League as it would directly come up against Chelsea, it is believed that Clement is keen on convincing Terry that a move to Swansea will not hurt his status as a Chelsea legend.
Frank Lampard went through a similar phase when he joined up with Manchester City, but this move was widely criticised by Chelsea fans, who were not prepared to see Lampard wearing the jersey of one of their title rivals. Clement has managed to keep Swansea in the Premier league after coming to the club in the second half of the campaign.
“I’m going to get this season done, and he’s obviously got a lot on himself. There’s a big game for him coming up at Stamford Bridge, the last game of season, and I’m sure he’s going to get a wonderful send-off. I’m not sure. I will have a conversation with him. I’ve known him a long time. I don’t know what his thinking is, whether he’s going to carry on first of all – there’s been talk in the media that it’s going to be his last game,” said Clement.
