Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has claimed that Chelsea will be paying over the top for Enzo Fernandez, who was crowned as the young player of the tournament at the World Cup 2022. The 21-year-old midfielder has been made as a key priority for Chelsea in the January transfer window. The blues are reportedly ready to make a bid of £ 112 million for the midfielder who is seen as a complete package. The blues are in need of a midfielder with N’Golo Kante suffering a string of injury problems in recent years while the future of Jorginho is also in a lot of doubt.
Neville says that there is no doubt that Fernandes is one of the top young players in the world. However, he is surprised that Chelsea are ready to go well beyond £ 100 million and smash their transfer record in the process of signing the player. It is not the first time that Neville has criticised the transfer approach my Premier league outfits. He was critical when Manchester United decided to splash £ 84 million on Antony in the summer. Similarly, he criticised United’s record move for Paul Pogba in 2016 and it was not a surprise that the Frenchman never really settled at Old Trafford throughout his tenure.
“Are Chelsea paying €127m for Enzo Fernandez? That’s one hell of a price. A very good player but bloody hell!” said the Neville on his Twitter account. After the change in ownership, Chelsea have been spending vast sums of money. In the summer, the club splashed out £ 250 million on players like Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. However, it appears that the transfer shopping list is not complete for the blues who have been struggling under the management of Graham Potter.
