Arsenal manager Unai Emery has said that he is unsure whether the current season could be the last for goalkeeper Petr Cech. The former Czech international has not featured for the Gunners since picking up a hamstring problem in September and during this period, he has played second fiddle to Bernd Leno between the sticks.
Owing to this, there has been regular speculation that Cech could be released at the expiry of his contract in the summer and Emery has now hinted that could be the case, he said:”I don’t know now. This is a question for the club and the player to deal with our necessary things with the goalkeeper. But when he played at the start of the season, he did very well. He was very good behaviour, commitment and performance. Then when he had the injury Leno started playing with a big performance also and then he recovered his position on the bench. But I am happy with him.”
Since returning from injury in October, Cech has exclusively featured in the Cup games for the Gunners and he could earn a rare appearance this weekend whether the club are scheduled to face Blackpool in the FA Cup third round. Meanwhile, there has recently been the speculation that the Gunners could acquire the signature of Keylor Navas from Real Madrid but Emery has quickly dismissed the gossip by stressing that there has been no contact with the Costa Rican keeper.
Arsenal are currently fifth in the Premier League table at the moment and they are scheduled to face West Ham United on the road following their FA Cup commitments at Blackpool. The Gunners are presently three points behind Chelsea for the final Champions League spot and the quest for the fourth position could go down to the wire with Manchester United also in the hunt.
